King's Lynn has a history that dates back to 1085, where the parish of Lynn is mentioned in the Domesday Book, described as a "modest village with many saltings", which is an area of land that is regularly covered by the tide. By 1101 the Bishop of Norwich had granted a license to the people of Lynn to hold a weekly market and an annual fair and just over a century later King John granted the settlement a town charter. By the 14th century the town has developed into a centre exporting wool, grain, salt and pitch and importing fish and iron. In 1537 King Henry VIII takes control of the town and it becomes known as King's Lynn.
